Obituary for Herbert Franz Steinbach

Steinbach, Herbert Franz (b. March 2, 1926 – d. April 2, 2017)

Herbert died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, April 2, 2017. Herb and wife Ingetraud (nee Groepler) were married in Berlin, Germany on June 18, 1953. They enjoyed 63+ years of marriage. Determined to seek a better life in Canada, Herb arrived in Sudbury on July 9th that same year. Once he had secured a job at Inco and a place to live, Ingetraud joined him in the fall of 1953. Herb was predeceased by his father Werner and mother Anna (nee Matuschek).

After his retirement in 1982 Herb enjoyed many blissful years at his camp on Lake Penage fishing, swimming and welcoming family and friends. Herb enjoyed spending time with his beloved grandchildren and great grandson. Summers will never be the same without Opa’s organic raspberries to munch on.

Left to mourn his passing are his wife Ingetraud and daughters Karin (Bruce Holson) and Marion (Jurgis Labuckas). His grandchildren will miss their beloved Opa, Elisha (Brad), Maya (Matthew Gibson), Peter and Emily. Herb’s great-grandson Hudson will also miss his Ur-Opa. Surviving relatives and friends are in Germany and Sudbury.

As per Herb’s wishes his body was cremated and ashes will be interred at a private family service on Friday, April 7, 2017. A celebration of his life will take place in late summer of this year. Memorial donations may be sent to St. Andrew’s United Church or to a charity of personal choice.
