Obituary for Marietta Nunziata Catalano (Micelotta)

Marietta Nunziata Micelotta Catalano (June 17th, 1925 - April 18th, 2017)
Maria passed away unexpectedly in her home on the morning of Tuesday April 18th, 2017. She was a fiercely independent woman who devoutly loved God and her family.

She was born in Camini, Italy, the eldest of eight children. At a young age she took her responsibilities as a caregiver very seriously. She helped raise her 7 younger siblings. Maria stayed in contact with her extended family and as recently as this Easter had called everyone to wish them well.

She was a creative, intelligent woman who enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting. Maria could do anything she set her mind to, and engaged in frequent, lively discussions about politics and global issues.
As a young woman she became a seamstress, sewing for elite clients such as the Baroness in her hometown and the Catholic Church. She had her own business and when she immigrated to Canada in December 1956, she brought her Singer Treadle Sewing Machine with her. She continued her seamstress craft, becoming a fur finisher and working for Richmond Furs for 26 years.
She also loved gardening, cooking, pastry-making and bread-making. As recently as this past Easter she cooked her best turkey dinner for her family. She was generous without limit, sharing what she had with her family and friends. Everyone who tried them will remember she baked the best crab apple pies.
She found strength and comfort in her faith as a life-long parishioner of St. Anthony’s church, reciting daily prayers for her loved ones. She was an active member of the Catholic Women’s League, for the past 60 years. God blessed her with a long, healthy life. At almost 92, she still cooked meals for her extended family, lived alone, paid her own bills, looked after a large home and garden, kept in touch with family and friends who lived locally and abroad, and enjoyed life.
She is survived by her children: Frank Catalano (wife, Allison), Piera O'Brien (husband, David) and Josephine Catalano. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild: Samantha Catalano (Erik Shadwick), Alexandria Catalano (Christopher Muirhead), Benjamin Catalano, Stuart O'Brien, Victor O'Brien, Isabella O'Brien, Catherine MacPherson (Joe Oschefski), Shawn MacPherson, Jonathan MacPherson-Gray, and Ali Zahwi.
She is survived by her siblings: Alfonso Micelotta, Pietro Micelotta, Nicola Micelotta, Stella Micelotta, Graziella Micelotta and Arturo Micelotta. Her brother Giuseppe Micelotta passed away on the same day as her.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of 52 years, Giuseppe Catalano (died January 9th, 2009) and her parents: Elisabetta Bombardieri and Francesco Micelotta. She will be sorely missed by numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and many dear friends. She lived a full life and has earned a good rest in Heaven.
Rest in Peace Maria.
