Obituary for
Marijan "Mario" Nosich
In Celebration of the Life
Of
Marijan Nosich
November 1, 1917 – June 9 2017
Gentle, honest, always smiling and ready to joke, Marijan was known to his friends and family as Mario, Tata, and Pa. After a long and full life, he died peacefully at Health Sciences North on the sunny evening of June 9th, 2017, just 144 days short of his 100th birthday.
Marijan was born in Lovrec, Croatia (Hrvatska) in 1917. He left his country as the Second World War came to an end to join his one and only true love, Maria, who he had met in Croatia. They married in Scherding, Austria at a refugee camp in 1946. Maria predeceased him in 2009 in their 63rd year of marriage.
They travelled from Austria and settled in Sudbury in 1951 to build a new life amongst the many other immigrants in the Donovan. With determination and hard work they accomplished much with very little. Marijan worked tirelessly to engage the community in celebrating the traditions of Croatian culture by organizing the Canadian Croatian Club, the Croatian Radio Program and many folklore events to share his heritage as a proud Canadian. He believed that people mattered most. His integrity, generosity, work ethic and quiet strength drew lifelong friendships to his circle. He was an active member of Holy Trinity Church Catholic Men’s Club and Sveti Marko Croatian Church, for as long as his health allowed.
Marijan first worked maintaining railroads for the CNR and then at INCO’s Creighton Mine, Copper Cliff Smelter and Copper Refinery as a machinist for 30 years. He spent his retirement enjoying 10 km daily walks and bocce games with the Donovan INCO/Falconbridge retiree gang, and travel with family to Florida, Manitoulin Island and Croatia.
Marijan's love for his family was without limit and Maria was his star. He was the beloved father of Miriam McDonald, Bradley (wife Sheila), Frank (wife Susan), Kathy (husband Christopher), and predeceased daughter Biserka and son Joseph; cherished Didi of Julia, Evan and Jeremy; and dear son of Marija (Batinic) and Mate Nosic.
Recent years found him with friends and staff at Finlandia Village who quickly learned the quiet, smiling Marijan loved a good dessert, his ball cap, his walks, and the people in his life. His family wishes to thank the compassionate and caring Finlandia team for always going above and beyond to ensure his comfort and wellbeing. To you he bids a “cushy mushy” farewell.

Family Thank you to friends who celebrated life of Marijan Nosich
November 1, 1917 – June 9, 2017
After a long and full life, our Pa, Marijan Nosich, died peacefully at Health Sciences North, on June 9th 2017, just 144 days shy of his 100th birthday. Over the last eight years since he lost his beloved Maria, our mother, he struggled with the pain of his loss while comforted by those he loved so dearly – his family and close friends. His children Miriam, Bradley, Frank and Kathy; their spouses Susan, Sheila and Christopher; and his grandchildren Julia, Evan and Jeremy brought him much joy and eased his aging struggles with their helping hands, their laughter and their hugs.
During this time, Pa enjoyed the daily companionship of Herman Dekker, his personal support friend who helped him lived independently at home for close to six years. Herman himself passed away this past April and our family will never forget the good care he gave our father. Supported by home visits by Dr. Bill McMullen, our Donovan neighbours who watched over him, and the Croatian food and cookie network, Pa was safe and sound in his “village.” For just over a year, new friends in the Finlandia Manty Wing provided their incredibly skilled and gentle care as he eased into his 100th year of life. Our family thanks and cherishes that the Finlandia Manty family, including Dr. Bakker and all the staff, strived to ensure Pa was comfortable and every day was spent as he loved – filled with good desserts, his ball cap, his walks and lots of laughs and hand-holding. It was – in his words – a “cushy mushy” time.
On his last day, Dr. Chris Bourdon, and many other Health Sciences North staff in the Emergency Department and 8N Cardiology, made sure Pa was comfortable and cared for expertly and compassionately.
After his passing, many friends helped our family. Special thanks to the Lougheed Family who orchestrated a lovely and fitting farewell. We thank Father Christopher Niewinski of Sveti Marko Croatian Church for giving us the strong message that Pa’s legacy of love and commitment remained in our lives. We thank all those who delivered a bounty of food, including Marica Bubalo who helped coordinate baking, the many HSN Pharmacy staff, and others who baked, cooked and worked to make the Croatian Centre funeral lunch a warm gathering. Special thanks to the Goegan, Morassut, Pluch, Frankic and extended Nosich families whose generosity and support made our hearts lighter. We also thank the pall bearers Srecko, Tommy and Teddy Bubalo, who along with Chris, Frank and Brad, helped carry Pa up the steep steps of Sveti Marko Church to his last Mass. And many thanks to all of our friends and neighbours for their gifts of food, flowers and memorial donations. You proved that helping hands and loving hearts rescue sorrow.
Hope, faith and love are all we need. Thank you everyone. Puno hvala svima!
