Obituary for Elma Skierszkan (Halsall)

Elma Skierszkan (Halsall)
In Loving Memory
of
Elma (Halsall) Skierszkan
Passed away Sunday, June 18th, 2017 at Health Sciences North, Sudbury after a very lengthy illness.

Daughter of Archibald and Edna Mary (Betts) Halsall, wife of Peter Skierszkan, sister of Julia Paveley, sister-in-law of Frank Paveley, Branislaw and Jazeps Skierszkan, aunt of Mark Paveley, and mother of Nicholas Skierszkan, all predeceased. She leaves behind her children Jane (Neil) Davidson, Simon (Martine) Skierszkan, Karl (Shannon Hengen), Julia (Andre Allore), her grandchildren Ryan (Hilary) Davidson, Andrew (Johanna Kelly) Davidson, Misha (Elizabeth) Davidson, Jesse Skierszkan, Elliott Skierszkan (Emily Rossnagel), Sophie Skierszkan (Gage Lowry), Tatiana (Philip Boudreau) Allore, and Edward Allore, her great grandchildren Carter, Nataliya, Logan, and Clark Davidson, and many nieces and nephews in Latvia, England, France, and Australia.

Elma was born October 9th, 1929 in Wallasey, UK. After having survived the bombing of Liverpool in the Second World War, she graduated from the University of Liverpool with a degree in Sociology. While she was on a bicycling tour in France in her youth, she was awe inspired by medieval churches, eventually converting to Catholicism despite Church politics. In the early 1950s, she emigrated to Canada for a life of adventure, settling in Sudbury and establishing a career at the Children’s Aid Society. She became a supervisor of Family services there, and helped protect many at-risk children, work of which she was justly proud. Elma was a dedicated follower of current events, a lover of movies and comedy, a whiz at crossword puzzles, and an artist at crocheting and knitting. Elma was a longtime parishioner at St. Matthieu's Church in Richard Lake and a longtime neighbour on Crown Ridge Road. She will be remembered with love and admiration for her keen intelligence, sense of humour, and strong spirit.

The family wishes to thank Crystal Way for helping to keep Elma in her own home, the staff at St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Center, the Reverend Rhonda Hurst and Rt. Reverend Anne Germond for their pastoral visits, and Elma’s loyal friends, for their many encouraging visits.
