Obituary for Murray James Low

Murray James Low
LOW, Murray James - We are grateful for the life and the love of Murray James Low, who passed away peacefully on the morning of August 13th, 2017 at Health Sciences North, surrounded by his dearest loved ones. Murray was born on Mother’s Day, May 12th, 1957, firstborn of Kay and Laurier Low. Murray’s dad predeceased him in 2012. He was raised in Killarney, Ontario. Murray had a close relationship with his grandparents, Angeline and Jimmy Delamorandiere, and Edith and Bill Low, all predeceased. He is survived by his six younger siblings: Denise (Mike Zuelfe predeceased), Charles, Grace (Ray Martel), Albert (Tracey), Kathy (David McDevitt), and Bill (Julie). He is also predeceased by his brother in law, Richard Lalande. He is survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

As a young teenager, Murray worked on his Grandpa Bill’s fishing dock, selling ice and worms to cottagers and visitors. He played hockey for the Killarney Northmen. His Yahama snowmobile, purchased when he was in his early twenties, was his pride and joy.

In 1982, Murray settled in Sudbury, Ontario. He married Maureen Oshell in April of 1983. Murray is survived by Maureen and their three children, Maggie, Nick, and Doug. He is predeceased by his mother and father in law, Yolanda and Leo Oshell. He is survived by his sisters in law, Madeleine (Bill Sutton) and Mickey (Michael Piela) and brother in law Michael Oshell (Lesia).

Murray was a loving and supportive father to his children. His lengthy stories and ridiculous sense of humour will never be forgotten. His laughter and unique observations about life will be cherished in our memories of him. He loved cooking for family and friends. The fish fries hosted by Murray and Maureen were enjoyed by many. His gentle heart and easy smile were the hallmarks of an unforgettable man.

Murray worked as a carpenter for over 30 years. He was involved in many construction projects; however his work at the YMCA camp on John Island was very special to him. “Mur-Dog” will be remembered by staff and campers fondly as they recall his antics while working there. He particularly loved working with the students from Lasalle Secondary School and their teacher, Peter Lucano.

Murray played baseball on Tuesday nights for 33 years. How he enjoyed their games and getting together afterward for a beer, wings, and conversation. Murray’s devotion and loyalty to the Toronto Maple Leafs was legendary. He supported his team through thick and thin, always convinced that the Stanley Cup was never far from their grasp. He suffered a great deal of teasing from family and friends through every losing season.

Murray loved life. He was a very positive person and every day he was always “just great”. People were drawn to him, as he was kind, hard-working, and welcoming. He was an extraordinary son, brother, husband, friend, and most of all – the proudest father ever. Never fear, Murray: in heaven, the Leafs win the cup every year!
