Obituary for Olga Dawydiak (Liba)

Olga Dawydiak (Liba)
In Loving Memory
of
Olga Dawydiak (nee Liba)
89 years

Monday, August 28th, 2017 at Health Sciences North, Sudbury.

Beloved wife of Walter Dawydiak and loving mother of Orysia, Roman Ihor, Zenon Eugene and Terry Dawydiak (spouse Jodie Wilson). Cherished grandmother of Kaylan Dawne, Christopher Kyle and Kira Anne Dawydiak. Dear daughter of John and Katherine Liba, sister of Katherine Hrycak, Peter Liba and 2 infant brothers John and Peter, all predeceased. Sadly missed by many nieces and nephews – Jean Kozelko (spouse Peter), John Liba (spouse Elta) from Sudbury, and also in the US, Ihor (Ace), Milton, Peter, Mary Ann, Michael and two predeceased nephews, Raymond and John. Also missed by the children of Jean (Terry, Katherine and Anastasia) and John (Christopher, Stephanie and Andrew) of Sudbury.

Olga was born on March 1, 1928 in Borshevich, Ukraine. During the Second World War she left with her mother and sister Katherine to work as labourers in Germany. After the war she immigrated to Manchester, England where she met her husband Walter Dawydiak. Upon locating her brother Peter in Bissett, Manitoba, they reunited with her family in Canada. They eventually settled in Sudbury, Ontario where Walter was employed at INCO and they raised their four children.

Olga was a member of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church and also an active member of the Women’s League of Ukrainian Canadians. She kept up Ukrainian traditions with her fine cooking and was known for her insistence that her visitors were always well fed. This hospitality extended to feeding the local birds and wildlife. She was a master crafter of pysanky, the beautiful Ukrainian Easter eggs, and generously shared her skills with many others over the years. She filled her home with her own embroidery as well as art collected from visits to Ukraine. Her memory was sharp to the end as she frequently recalled her childhood in Ukraine, the family and neighbours she left behind. But fate took Olga to a land of promise, and she was proud to be Canadian. Vichnaya pamyat from your loving family.
