Obituary for
Cecil Frank Baxter
Cecil Frank Baxter
March 30, 1921-October 4, 2017
Cecil was born on March 30, 1921 in Coventry, England as the youngest child of seven to John Baxter (predeceased) and Emma (nee Matthews) (predeceased). His post-secondary education was at The Technical College of Coventry, England from 1938-1941. While awaiting his call for training with the Royal Air Force (RAF), Cecil was part of the volunteer fire brigade of Coventry, an organization that saw tremendous involvement in fire and rescue during the merciless blitz of Coventry by the Luftwaffe. Cecil met Jean, his wife of 70 years while doing flight and reconnaissance training for the RAF in the Maritimes, Canada. After the war, Cecil returned to Canada and married Jean in St. John, New Brunswick on June 28, 1947.
Cecil worked as a physical metallurgist, industrial radiologist and metallurgical chemist with the International Nickel Company (INCO), Ford Motor Company and the Canadian National Railway (CNR). Jean and Cecil resettled in Sudbury, Ontario in the late 1950’s where Cecil became the Senior Materials Specialist with INCO at the Engineering Department in Copper Cliff, Ontario. He published papers in several journals including Canadian Chemical Processing and wrote on the use of ultrasonography in the detection of metal fatigue. He retired in 1981. Cecil returned to university post retirement and took courses in Classical and Religious Studies at Laurentian University.
Cecil is survived by his wife Jean (nee Smith) and children, Barbara, John (Mary Ellen) and Beverly. He is Grampy to Christopher, Tiffany, Andrea, Erin, Melissa, Jay, Owen and Scott and great Grampy to Emily, Jay, Breanna, Violet, Rose, Leopold, Kate, Avery and Rowan. Dear brother of Edgar, Frank, George, Harold, William and Emma all predeceased. Sadly missed by many loving nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Brain Canada Foundation (research for aging and neo-degenerative diseases) would be appreciated.
