Obituary for Emma Egidia Battistuzzi

Emma Egidia Battistuzzi
In loving memory of Emma Battistuzzi, the last surviving member of the Coniston Battistuzzis, who passed away peacefully in hospital on Friday, October 20th, 2017, with her niece Elizabeth at her side. Emma was born on April 4th, 1922 to Angela and Giuseppe Battistuzzi (both predeceased) in the little yellow house on “Shorty’s Hill” at the end of Thomas Street in Coniston. She is predeceased by her siblings Maristo (Theresa Franchetto), Vilia (Angelo Franchetto), Inez (Hector Fabris), and Nildo (“Shorty”). She is survived by nieces and nephews Joan Crowley, Pixie (no! it's Anne Marie!) Baby, Fred Battistuzzi, Jane Rodrigues, Raymond Franchetto, Elizabeth Irvine, Irene Robinson, Eileen Ptok and James Fabris.

Never marrying, Emma was a caregiver to her parents and her brother. She unselfishly gave up a life of her own to ensure that her loved ones were well looked after, something only she could do. She was very close with her sisters and brothers throughout their lives, and was a generous, caring, and loving aunt to her nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. She spent many, many hours babysitting, which often included knitting and washing many a Barbie doll’s tiny wardrobe. Her willingness to hide from the truancy officer a niece reluctant to go to school, or to defend from angry parents a nephew with poor archery skills, demonstrate her dedication to family.

Emma was known to provide water, pop, and snacks to all the Coniston kids after a “busy” day of sliding on Shorty’s Hill – and maybe a bandage or two when someone ran into a fence or garage. After Emma could no longer look after the family homestead, she moved to Le Pavilion Seniors’ Residence in Coniston, where she was surrounded by many friends and former neighbours. If we needed someone to look in on her, we were very fortunate that everyone there was willing to look in on her and make sure she was all right.

Emma was a wonderful cook. Her fried mushrooms, rice pudding, and breaded cauliflower were family favourites. She loved to spend time with her family and always had fun regardless of the menu or location. What mattered most to Emma was that everyone was together to share food, stories, and memories.

Anyone who knew Emma knew that her true love was televised sports. She had a sport for every season: curling, hockey, and baseball. Her favourite, though, was curling. You could call or visit during baseball and hockey, but were not to disturb Emma during curling. You were also not to bother her when she attended television mass every day at noon (if you visited, you went to mass with her).

Emma was a well-known member of the Coniston community. She was a longtime member of the Catholic Women’s League (CWL) of St. Paul’s Parish and a regular attendee at Mass until she was no longer able to climb the church steps. A Coniston resident all her life, Emma walked to the grocery store, bank, post office, or wherever else she needed to go. She never accepted a ride from anyone – “No, sir! I can walk!” – until, at the age of 93, her knees no longer allowed her to walk freely. Emma enjoyed her walks, which might be why she stayed so healthy for so long. She was fiercely independent and always wanted to do things on her own and in her own way and time. (In the dictionary, there is a picture of Emma under the word “stubborn”.) Even in her final years, she had no interest in using a cane or walker, for she thought it would make her “look old”.

Eventually, Emma grew tired of doing things around the house, which perhaps makes sense after that many decades. In April 2017, she moved to the beautiful facility of Meadowbrook Retirement Village in Lively. Here, too, she was close to family and was quite pleased that she no longer had to cook, clean, do laundry, or the “dreaded” dishes. She enjoyed her meals with her tablemates and got to know a few people. Although her stay was short, she made quite an impression on residents and staff.

Emma’s family would like to thank and extend our blessings to those who made her last year comfortable and of good quality. The residents at Le Pavilion looked in on her and watched out for her. Barb took on the household chores that Emma got so tired of doing. The staff and coordinators from CCAC, including Chantal, Lee, and Brenda, supported her daily care. Dear, sweet Rosanne, from Home Instead, became a true friend and someone Emma loved dearly and looked forward to spending time with. The staff and management at Meadowbrook ensured that Emma was well looked-after and felt safe and comfortable. At Meadowbrook, Emma was surrounded by loving attendants and knowledgeable staff who always greeted Emma and had a kind word for her; they were particularly supportive in helping Emma get her TV remote to the right channel. We thank the staff at Dr. Jacques’ office and the staff of the Coniston Medical Office who cared so well for Emma for so many years. We are particularly grateful to the ER Nurse Brittany and to Dr. Montpellier for the caring and compassionate care during Emma’s final hours and Chewy Cormier for the fun visits and chats.

Donations to NEO Kids Sudbury or your favourite charity will be greatly appreciated. Shasta daisies were Emma’s favourite flowers. The next time you see one, think of her and smile.
