Obituary for David "Robbie" Robertson

David "Robbie" Robertson
David "Robbie" Robertson passed away peacefully, on November 28, at Extendicare York, with his wife Reta at his side. He was in his 94th year. Our father was born on a farm near Charlottetown, PEI, on November 15, 1924. He married Evelyn Robertson (Bagg, predeceased 2000) in July, 1950. Predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Cyrene Robertson and his brothers Arthur (Bud) and Wilfred. Survived by his sisters, Elvia (Evie) Richards and Ada Champion, sons Norm Robertson ( Laurie), Will Robertson (Beth) and daughter, Carolyn Sasseville (Terry), grandchildren, Sean Robertson (Victoria), Steven Robertson (Samantha Falcioni), Heather Peters (Jesse), Natalie Allan (Joe) and Kyle Sasseville (Ashton Labonte), great grandchildren Cole, Wyatt and Zane Allan ( "the buckeroos"), Lukas and Isla Robertson and Avery Peters. Also survived by his wife Reta Hickey and her family: Cathy Miller (Roger Dore), Brenda Bryson (Don), Bill Hickey (Marybeth), Mary-Pat Paillard (Bruno), and David Hickey (Hali). Sadly missed by many nieces and nephews. Dad was very proud of his PEI roots. He left PEI in 1944 to enlist in the air force. After the war, he studied engineering at the Ajax campus of the University of Toronto. He followed his brother, Bud, to Sudbury and joined INCO as a mechanical engineer, but not before meeting his future wife, Evelyn, in Oshawa. He had a long and successful career at INCO ending with 2 years in Indonesia as superintendent of engineering. While there he and mom had the opportunity to explore the countries of South East Asia. After retirement, he was an active volunteer with the Walden police and Meals On Wheels. For many years, post retirement, mom and dad spent time in sunny Florida. When he first moved to Lively, Dad was an active member of the Lively Athletic Association and one of the founding members of the Lively Golf Course. His love of PEI has been passed on to the extended Robertson clan as we all regularly return to beautiful PEI. Robbie took great pride in the activities and achievements of his 5 grandchildren. His guidance and patience instilled a love of golf in his grandsons Sean, Steven & Kyle. He and mom, and later Reta, were active socially in Lively, with card groups, bowling, golfing and the Seniors Centre. Dad was a true gentleman, always interested in the lives of family and friends. He had a wonderful capacity for listening-always attentive to others. He and mom were pioneers when they purchased their camp on Johnnie Lake in the “foothills of the Killarney mountains". It is a rich & cherished inheritance for his family. He spent many happy hours at camp entertaining family & friends. He enjoyed sharing stories of all the good times at camp, and his early life on PEI, including the silver fox farming era. He was the de facto leader of the Robertson Clan and for that reason his seat at the head of the dinner table overlooking Johnnie Lake will always be his. Robbie and his family were blessed when he married Reta in 2001. She continues to treat us with love & generosity. A special thanks to all the staff on the 3rd floor of Extendicare York, for their continuing and thoughtful care of our father for the last 2 years. A memorial service to be held in the Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home, 233 Larch Street, Sudbury on Saturday December 2, 2017 at 11:30 am. Luncheon to follow upstairs. Donations to the Blue Door Soup Kitchen or Meals On Wheels would be appreciated. To light a memorial candle, donations or messages of condolences available on-line at www.lougheed.org.
