Obituary for
Mary Doane Knight (Newell)
Mary Doane Knight (Newell)
April 8, 1913 - February 3, 2018
Surrounded by her loving family, Mary Knight passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 3, at the age of 104.
Mary was born in Bear River, Nova Scotia, and grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the second of six children to Thomas and Katherine Newell. She married John Knight in 1942 then moved to Sudbury where they raised their family.
She was predeceased by her husband John, in 1974 and is survived by her four children: John Knight (Kay); Rona Knight; Carroll Owens (Ray predeceased); and Debbi Nicholson (George predeceased). What brought a smile to her face was spending time with her dearly loved 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Aunt Mary was the last of her generation and will be sadly missed by her many nieces and nephews.
Mary volunteered in many community services, including: the Church of the Epiphany Altar Guild; the original chapter of the IODE; and spent 20 years as a volunteer at the Northeastern Cancer Centre until “retiring” at age 98!
Participating in various activities throughout her life such as yoga, aqua fitness, bridge, golf, and especially knitting, kept Mary young and attributed to her longevity.
She will be missed and fondly remembered as a kind and gracious woman who impacted all who met her with her loving demeanour and warm smile.
The family appreciates the kindness and care provided by special staff at Extendicare York and Total Nursing Care.
