It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Alli Irma Rantala on Monday, February 19th, 2018 at Health Sciences North. Born in Lappajarvi, Finland on September 5th, 1934. Beloved wife of the late Eino Rantala (2007). Loving daughter of Senja and Niilo Lamminen (both predeceased). Dear sister of Katri, Veikko, Vaino, Risto, Tapani, Anna-Liisa, Marja, Eila, and Timo. Loving mother of Raija (Erkki), Jouko (Marlene), Lisa (Darrel) and Paul (Renee). Devoted Mummo to Marita, Matti, Eric, Karl, Neil, Bailey, Logan, Kate and Markus. Alli immigrated with Eino and young children Raija and Jouko to Northern Ontario in 1958. They lived in Levack, Timmins and Sudbury, eventually building a house and settling in Salo Subdivision, Water’s Township where Lisa and Paul were raised. Alli worked as a seamstress and housecleaner. She completed a college program as a dietary aid and was employed in the kitchen of Memorial hospital for many years until she retired in 1999. A classically trained singer in her youth, she enjoyed being in choirs and she was a member of St. Matthew’s Finnish Lutheran church choir for 50 years. Alli was skilled at sewing and spent countless hours knitting intricate socks and mittens for family members. She also took great pride providing meals for the family, baking countless loaves of pullaa, cookies and blueberry pies. Alli enjoyed spending time outdoors, whether it be the family camp on Manitoulin Island or tending to her vegetable and flower gardens at home. Although she was only able to spend a few months there, she was happy to be living at Finlandia Koti enjoying the friends, cultural activities and food. In her final years, she overcame several difficult health hurdles, always maintaining a positive and determined attitude. Alli was a gentle, kind and caring wife, mother, mummo and friend who will be dearly missed.
