Obituary for Dorothy "Pat" Thomson (Hough)

Dorothy "Pat" Thomson (Hough)
Dorothy Mary “Pat” Thomson

Dorothy Mary “Pat” Thomson was a woman of great determination, unquestioning religious faith, notable artistic talent, unlimited energy and an ability to self-advocate for those things she believed in. Born on February 1, 1924, in North Bay, the second of five children, four of them brothers, “Pat,” as she was known to family and friends, learned quickly how to fend for herself. Pat grew up in Sudbury at 277 Pine Street and at “the camp” on Ramsey Lake’s South Bay; she played hockey, skied, and was a superb distance swimmer. On her French side, Pat’s ancestors settled in Chambly in 1660, southeast of Montreal.
Pat, like her husband, was a war veteran, having served in the Canadian Intelligence Corps during WW11. She married Lieut. Ray Jessup Thomson in 1943, gave birth to two sons, Michael Ray (Nancey) and William Lewis (Marnie), and then moved to Henri Street in 1953 where Pat and Ray remained for 53 years. Pat and Ray were married for 74 years and two days. She loved her home and property with its many rock gardens, fountains, mature trees and its beautiful setting. Pat, who once studied under A Y Jackson, was an accomplished water colourist and taught art for many years. A member of the Northern Ontario Art Association, Pat conducted several successful watercolour exhibitions with some of the North’s most renowned artists. Ray and Pat loved the North with all its natural beauties and bounties and built and enjoyed for many years a log summer home on Birch Lake near Webbwood. Throughout the years, Pat remained a devout Roman Catholic who generously gave of her time and finances to various community and family causes.
Following several health issues, Pat relocated to St Joseph’s Villa in 2006 where she remained until her passing. Pat was predeceased by her parents, Wilfrid James Hough (Nee Lepage) and Gwendolyn Maude (Nee Prosser) and brothers Tom Hough (Denise) and John Hough (Corey); she is survived by her two sons, six grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and brothers James Wilfrid Hough (Bev) of Ottawa and David Hough (Ruth), Sudbury.
A special thank you to the men and women of St Joseph’s Villa who cared for Ray and Pat for many years with kindness, compassion and a commitment to their well-being. Dorothy Mary…”Pat”…Thomson will be missed by her many friends and family.
Donations to the St. Joseph’s Villa in Pat Thomson’s memory are appreciated.
