Condolence From: Marcel Danesi
Condolence: Lucia and I are beyond words with our sadness. We have been close to Paul and the whole Colilli family forever. Even our grandchildren, Alex and Sarah, have been mourning his loss. They have the same fond memories as we do of Paul, Julian, Olivia, Andrea, and Diana while we were at Middlebury for so many years. I had Paul as a grad student and remember his brilliance in class, which led to publications and years later to collaborations on books, encyclopedia entries, and so on. I must stop here otherwise I could go on without ever finding the appropriate words. We will miss you sorely. RIP! Marcello and Lucia

Condolence From: Erick Zepeda Mckinlay
Condolence: Diana and Family I have thought of the moment I will share with you for years...it is one which I will remember throughout my life. One day at Middlebury College I headed for my afternoon class of Petrarcha. The Italian school had just finished lunch and of course Professors were on their way to class just as students were. As God's blessing would have it, that day, I met with Paul on my way out of the lunch building. We were both accompanied by incredible rain! It was pouring! I did not have an umbrella, but Paul had one and he stretched his arm so that I would be covered. We walked for over five minutes, talking while he held his umbrella to his cost in order to keep my dry. I felt bad, because I know how hard it can be to hold one's arm in a stagnant position such as stretched out at a 90 degree angle. But, Paul did it for me. When we arrived at the building where he would lecture on Petrarcha, Paul folded his umbrella and I was soaked! His efforts had not helped in keeping the rain off me at all. And in any other case I would have forgotten this moment, but Paul's presence keeps it in my mind with great detail. I cannot tell you how many of these moments I have jealously kept as his proud student. Diana you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. May God bless you and your family. Que Dio Siempre Los Bendiga. Sincerely, Erick Mckinlay

Condolence From: Peter Carravetta
Condolence: Dear Diana, I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to you and your family for the parting of Paul. The news was a true shocker (I was not aware that he may have had health issues recently). I knew Paul since the beginning of our careers in the 80s, we always looked to each other's work for inspiration (since we were among the few to link literature and philosophy), we always had meaningful exchanges that touched on our common experience as immigrants, as intellectuals caught between several worlds. Above all to me he was such a warm, generous, perceptive human being, someone who really cared where not just our lives, but the world itself is going. I will miss him greatly. Please take solace in the fact that he was loved and respected, and his professional legacy will live on. Peter (from Stony Brook University)

Condolence: Dear Diana and Family: I have been delaying writing this message as I am still struggling with Paul's passing, and cannot imagine how you and your family must be feeling. His is a great loss to the university - I cannot think of anyone so well respected and trusted as Paul in the Faculty of Arts. I always wanted to be able to speak with the same wisdom, clarity and thoughtfulness as he always did. My department is forever grateful for all the support he offered us over the years. The greater loss is to his family, and I will continue to think of you in this time of grief. Please accept my sincerest condolences.

Condolence From: Paul Cappon
Condolence: Diana, the fact that I had not seen Paul or you for 20 years does nothing to diminish the fond memories I hold for you both. Paul embodies all that I find most ennobling about academics and universities. His profound connexion to fellow travellers in study, in language and in cultural interest signifies what we mean by the Humanities: for me, Paul was the measure by which colleagues may be seen. Paul Cappon my warmest regards and sympathy to you, Diana, and to your family

Condolence: Dear Diana, It is with heavy heart that I write this message to you and your family. Paul was a truly exceptional man, full of insight, wit, erudition, and compassion. From our first meeting at Laurentian to our more recent discussions surrounding music, culture, and life, he never failed to inspire a profound sense of wonder, catalyze an ardent desire for knowledge, and expose the very core of what it means to be human. His memory and spirit will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of the countless lives he has touched and inspired. Abbracci.

Condolence From: Peter Simpson
Condolence: I am very sorry to hear of Paul’s passing. He was a true academic colleague: committed to learning and study, supportive of colleagues (especially junior colleagues) and a person who connected the community and the campus with extraordinary respect for both. Paul was every academic’s vision of a Dean: a peer as well as a leader, a person who stood for, and stood up for, values shared by his colleagues. His loss is a very difficult thing for people committed to the core values of higher education, and for people who love Sudbury. I am glad to have known him and worked alongside him, and very sorry for Diana and the family’s loss.
