Obituary for Emil Kurchina

In Loving Memory of
Emil Theodore Kurchina

Our dear husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and great uncle passed away at the Maison McCulloch Hospice on April 26, 2018 in the presence of his loving family. Born in Little Longlac [Geraldton], Ontario in 1936, Emil had just celebrated his 82nd birthday on April 20, 2018.
He is survived by his wife Shirley, his life partner for 58 years. He will be dearly missed by his children Paul [Erin], Susan [Mark], Michael [Kelly] and Todd and by his grandchildren Braeden and Tyler Kurchina, Kurtis and Taylor Stone, Matthew and Steven Kurchina, and Kristen [Jake] Lintack, and Lydia, Adria and Deanna Kurchina. Emil was predeceased by his birth mother Maria, his father Andrew, his life mother Pauline and by his sister Pauline Hinterbrandner. He leaves behind his sisters Mary Migay [Rudy (predeceased)], Helen [John] Alaksa and Kristine [Joe] Renda, sisters in law Marjorie McGill [Saville (predeceased)], Diane Babcock [Ron (predeceased)] as well as many nieces and nephews in Canada, and relatives in Slovakia.
Emil retired as a chemistry teacher in 1996. While stoic in his outward impression, Emil’s heart was soft for the ones he loved. Mostly known as "Mr. Kurchina," Emil continued to surprise his former chemistry students with his memory and cheeky sense of humour. A man of incredible work ethic, his strength and desire to learn was endless. Nothing could stop him from completing a goal or task with absolute precision. In everything he did, Emil was invested in sustaining all kinds of life for generations ahead. Somewhat of a renaissance man, Emil was humble and dignified to the very end. Emil would say he could build or repair just about anything but is fondly remembered saying “ the only thing he couldn’t fix was a broken heart”.
A very special thank you to the staff at the Maison McCulloch Hospice for their compassion and professional care. At the family’s request there will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Sudbury Hospice Foundation would be appreciated.
