Obituary
Margaret Martel

Margaret Martel died peacefully on Saturday June 16, 2018 of congestive heart failure in her 98th year in Sudbury, Ontario.
Born July 26, 1920 in Sudbury, Ontario into a large family of 13 siblings, Margaret lived most of her life in Lively where she raised 5 children with her husband James (deceased).
She is survived by daughters Theresa Pinkney (Gerry) and Marie Sinnott (Gerard) and a son, Allan (Christine). Sons David and Michael predeceased Margaret. Margaret is also survived by a daughter-in - law Tina as well as grandchildren James Paul and Tracy Pogue (Pat) and great grandson Mitchell.
Margaret was a tireless volunteer throughout her life. She was an intelligent student of history, committed enough to earn her university degree quite late in life, largely by correspondence. But literacy was her passion and she dedicated her life to local actions in support of that goal.
She was the volunteer librarian for over 30 years building a collection of books from mysteries to fly fishing techniques. When the Town of Lively was absorbed into the Greater Municipality of Sudbury, she shifted her focus to local schools.
She was an avid puppeteer and gave regular performances at local elementary schools using her hand-made marionettes when she wasn’t building two school’s libraries at her own expense, book by book.
She gave regular reading sessions to younger grades in the elementary schools and ensured that each Grade 4 child received his or her hand-made custom book bag produced on her own sewing machine.
An avid bridge player and gardener, Margaret leaves behind many friends and admirers.
At her request, there will be no funeral service or memorial event. Donations to the Maison McCulloch Hospice in Sudbury or to the Sudbury Public Library in lieu of flowers would be appreciated.
