Obituary for Sister Anne Brotherton

Sister Anne Brotherton (Sister St. Dominic)
November 12, 1924 - September 9, 2018

It is with sadness that the Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie announce the death of Sister Anne Brotherton on September 9, 2018, at St. Joseph’s Motherhouse, North Bay, ON.

Sister Anne (Lavilla) was born in Fort William, Ontario (Thunder Bay) on November 12, 1924, one of eight children, three boys and five girls, born to Mary (Hogan) and Louis Philip Brotherton. Sister Anne is predeceased by her parents, and her siblings Phyllis Quart, Inez Devine, Barbara Bruce, Robert Brotherton, Albert (Bud) Brotherton, and Gertrude Kernaghan. She is survived by her beloved brother John, his wife Lynn, and many cherished nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

Anne’s elementary and secondary education took place in Fort William where she was first introduced to the Peterborough Sisters of St. Joseph in the person of Sister Benilda her school principal at St. Stanislaus elementary school. Anne attended St. Patrick’s High School, Thunder Bay for her secondary education. In 1944, Anne received her Ontario Teachers’ Certificate from the Teachers’ College in North Bay and began her initiation into the teaching profession. Her first teaching position was in the small town of Raith (Fort William). In 1945, she was hired by the Fort William Roman Catholic School Board where she taught at St. Peter’s elementary school.

Sister Anne entered the congregation of The Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie on August 2, 1946, St. Dominic’s Feast Day, and assumed this name for many years of her religious life. Following her novitiate, Anne served as principal at St. Martin’s school, Fort William and throughout her career in education she served as principal in seven different elementary schools in North Bay, Blind River, Wawa, Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie. Sister Anne loved her hometown of Fort William and in 1967, was acknowledged for her poem, “A Tribute to Fort William”, published in the Lakehead newspaper when it marked Canada’s Centennial year.

Sister Anne received her Master in Education in 1973 from the University of Ottawa and then in 1976 returned to a year of study at Divine Word International Centre in London. Anne returned to teaching at Marymount College, Sudbury, and retired from there in 1982.

Following chaplaincy studies, Anne served in hospital pastoral care ministry at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Thunder Bay, and in 1984 her ministry path brought her to serve for eight years in the office of the Marriage Tribunal, Thunder Bay, followed by 18 years of pastoral care ministry at Corpus Christi parish, Thunder Bay.

Sister Anne welcomed retirement from active pastoral ministry in 2002 but continued to be a caring, pastoral presence where she resided at PR Cook apartments at St. Joseph’s Heritage, Thunder Bay. Sisters and staff were grateful for Anne’s joyful, caring, and healing presence following her move to St. Joseph’s Motherhouse in 2014.

The body of Sister Anne will be received at St. Joseph’s Motherhouse at 2:00 p.m., September 13, 2018, evening prayer and visitation will be held in the Holy Family Chapel, at 7:00 p.m. The mass of the resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., September 14, 2018, in the Sacred Heart Chapel. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, North Bay, Ontario.

Sister Anne Rest in Peace
