I had Mr Bacon as a sub for a few different classes. He was on teacher who's name has never left my head. he had a great impact as me. He was a great teacher and loved his job and it showed in his teaching. I was so sad when I heard he passed and he will always be missed.

Joe Bacon - one in a million. Everyday I worked at Lo-Ellen Park that Joe had a smile on his beautiful face. His laughter was contagious. He emanated optimism and hope. We performed Sonny & Cher together at the Christmas assembly, what a hoot. Love you, Joe Bacon.

Our friend Joe accomplished so much from exploring Ireland to skydiving to kayaking rapids or riding the crazy roller coaster at Wonderland (scary) with Hunter. We spent time exploring Cooper Lake, hiking and canoeing as teens and later connected again in retirement for more of the same. There was only one year that I didn't have Joe as a math teacher and I imagine that freed up a lot of his time as I was one of those students that struggled in math. Joe was always there early in the morning and during exam week patiently helping me advance year to year. He was a really good and decent guy that was meant to be teacher because he took the time with his students. Mentor, track coach, math or homeroom teacher, he was always there in my five years at Lo Ellen. If Joe ever had a fault, it was the weight of his darn pork press (washroom pass) that he made us haul around. You will be missed sir!

Our committee had Joe tell his touching story of receiving a kidney from his mother at our 2011 'Walk for a Second Chance' at Memorial Park, that he had the new kidney for 33 years. I had Mr Bacon as a math teacher (at Lo-Ellen Park) many years ago as well as a high school counsellor to discover my destined career/academic path. I was never really good at math (and in this case calculus), but he made learning easy and fun. he cared much about his students and he created a positive learning environment. no question was too silly and he strived to ensure that you understood the content. I enjoyed attending his class especially since he was always smiling and laughing. he had a way of igniting a love of math and a love of life. My deepest condolences. he will be sorely missed.

No one in my life has made a bigger impression on me ,than my brother Joe. Joe was my Hero. As a little girl I worshipped him, and as a woman I admired him. I was so proud to call Joe my brother, he was so loved and respected. I have so many great memories when I think of Mr. Bacon. I had him for my OAC Algebra class, and came one day with a sprained finger (that I had poorly splinted). After his math lesson, he came over to my desk with medical tape and properly taped up my finger, all the while explaining "how to tape a sprained finger the right way" to those that were watching. What a great man! Mr. Bacon was someone who had a bright smile and a rich sense of humour. He made learning fun and he was always there to help any of us with math when we needed it. It is so sad to hear that he is no longer with us. My deepest sympathies and condolences to his family.

I was so saddened to hear about Joe's passing. He was most definitely a White Knight at Lo-Ellen Park. He was one of those teachers who made going to school fun. He was able to connect to his students on many levels. As a coach, he was one of the three musketeers. Between Coach Joe, Martin & "G", I will always have fond memories of Lo-Ellen track and field. I was very saddened to get an email from my Dad on the passing of Joe. What can I say...this was an incredible guy who I will always remember. He was an amazing teacher, coach and friend to my entire family. My times at Lo-Ellen were some of the best years of my life. Coach G, Coach Martin, and Coach Bacon all made our track program the best around. Joe,my Dad and all my teachers and coaches at Lo-Ellen helped influenced me into becoming a teacher/coach as well. Let me tell you about Joe Bacon. He was all about our family. Coaching was one of his many strengths. Not only did he coach at Lo Ellen, but he was also our 2 incredible children's personal coach leading them with his positive attitude with charm and praise.To all the students he coached did you know Joe was quite the athlete himself. After his kidney transplant he represented Canada at the transplant olympics in Amsterdam and won at least 3 medals.I will miss his wit and sarcasm and his incredible sense of humor. I only got to know Joe over the last four years through my friend Ingrid who lives on Cooper Lake. I have posted a picture of Joe and Ingrid from a day in September 2010 when we went for a hike. I always liked the shot I have posted of Joe sitting and looking out at the view, he looked so peaceful. It was a joy to watch him with his grandson Hunter, he loved the time they shared together. Joe was always busy, always heading somewhere. He was happy to share his homemade wine and music he had heard in Ireland. He had a quick wit and was a generous and supportive friend, I will miss him. My condolences go out to his family and friends. Joe was a good man.

I will never forget the day he was substitute teaching our gr 9 math class and while we were supposed to be working on homework, he randomly challenged me to a race in the halls of Lo-Ellen Park SS in his dress shoes and 'let me win', all as a ruse to get me to join the hurdle/PV team. It worked and with his help i won NOSSA PV in my first year and went on to OFSAA all 4 years of highschool. Thank you for your inspiration, motivation and nothing is impossible attitude that you taught me and i'm sure many others. Thank you for everything.

Joe will be sorely missed as a wonderful cottage neighbour and long-time friend. It's a place Joe loved and we would see him rain, snow or shine outside with his buddy Cooper and his precious Hunter at his side. Joe loved an adventure and we loved to hear details of his trips whether it was to Ireland or just up the road to hide another Geocache. He got so excited sharing his stories and was always sincerely interested in ours. Joe, John and the Wylie boys shared a lot of laughs, and a few beers, over the many years they have known each other. Joe has "legend" status with our family and we will truly miss him. Our love to his family with an open invitation to visit any time we are there.

For me, Mr. Bacon was the teacher who had the ability to make you believe in yourself and help you work through math without viewing it with dread! He had a way of taking the time to explain, and re-explain in a way that made sense. He was always approachable with his wonderful sense of humour, and was always there for all of his students. Years after graduating, and now working in the Board myself, it always amazed me how he remembered me (and other students) with a smile and always something positive to say. I remember him instructing students in the hallway as they ran hurdles, and being very proud that my teacher competed in the ParaOlympics! You were an amazing person, who I am quite sure changed the lives of many students for the better. You will be sadly missed :(

I saw Joe just before Christmas when he hand-delivered his famous "Pulla" or Finnish coffeebread. He had been tweeking his recipe for years and honestly this was his best. It had just the right consistently - heavy but moist with lots of cardamom. I never had the opportunity to tell him how good it was. I hope his daughter passed on the message. Although Joe had gone through so much medically, he was always up beat and positive. We talked about the things he loved-his children,his grandson, his dog Cooper, and of course Ireland. A quote from Abraham Lincoln applies to Joe- "It's not the years in our life that count but the life in our years". Joe lived his 63 years to the fullest. I'm sorry it couldn't be longer Joe!

The last time I saw Joe, was this past May, when he, Doug Gingrinch, and Colin Ward shared stories of their coaching days at Lo-Ellen Park. I sat in the stands with them at Laurentian University this day and realized how special this moment was going to be.They are all Lo-Ellen Park Track and Field Coaching "Legends" and I was there to witness this moment. I always remember how I would "tease" Joe when we were at the OFSAA Track and Field meet.As a teacher, Joe was unable to enjoy a beer after the meet......and lord knows, he deserved one during that meet. We would often end up at the same restaurant as Joe, and we always made sure to "tease" Joe by sitting nice and close to him with an ice cold pitcher of beer. The first year of his retirement, Joe joined us for an ice cold pitcher of beer at the PIG AND FIRKEN in Etobicoke......that was where he taught me the true meaning of a "Firken". As a fellow track and field coach, I will always cherish my memories with "Mr. Bacon", and will miss him dearly. RIP my friend !!!
