Sometime after Halloween, Denise would put Big Brian into a form of forced labor during which she would make sure we had enough Christmas cookies to feed a small army. Denise had a number of very plausible reasons why she made them so far in advance, but I truly think it was for her own pleasure as she tormented us with the possibility of homemade treats while we plotted to find ways to steal just 1 or 12.  I am not sure if she had a camera or motion sensor on the freezer but every time, we got caught.

Denise tried so hard to be stern when she would catch us, hands in the freezer, cheeks filled like squirrels getting ready for winter, with so many frozen cookies in our mouths – half yelling and laughing “THOSE ARE FOR CHRISTMAS!”. Yet, an extra batch of peanut butter balls *my very favorite* ended up in my container of infamous Christmas baking even after we moved to Calgary and the cookies came a few days before the holidays.

It was things just like this  that just proved how much Denise loved to have fun. For example, she had a crazy infectious laugh. This little snort-ish giggle she would give when she was up to something or when Big Brian did something rather silly. My best example of this snort laugh would on the day I like to call “3-F Day”. I was visiting my future husband at home when Big Brian wanted to tell us all about his terrible day where the 3”F’s” broke. The PHONE, the FAN and the FURNACE. As he told his tale of the terrible ordeal, Denise sat, rolling her eyes as this was likely the 20th time she heard all about it. At the end, when he expected some sort of show of emotion from me, I merely said: “but Phone doesn’t start with an F”. Big Brian was about to lose his mind but from Denise came that signature snort laugh which gave us all permission to burst into giggles.

Over the years, as all the babies and kids came into the picture, Denise took on the role of the gentlest caregivers. She would take great pleasure in cuddles and stories as well as teaching the kids very young how to bug Grampo. My daughter Zoe, has had the wonderful opportunity to spend many weeks over the past few summers with Grammo and the Sudbury family. She can talk for hours about all the fun and hilarious things she did. I hope that she will be able to keep these happy memories for the rest of her life and share them with all her cousins for years to come.

Let’s honor Denise by finding never taking ourselves too seriously and finding ways to laugh, always welcome those around us and remember to be  be generous with our time and our feelings.
