Harry Sawkiw
who passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at Extendicare York on December 20, 2018 at the age of 93. Beloved husband of Johanna (nee Simko) for 68 years. Devoted Tato of Raymond and his wife Lesia, Doris and her husband Gabriel Buju. Doting Dido of Nicholas (Lindsay) of Calgary, William of Toronto and Ileana in Sudbury. Dear son of Wasyl and Maria Sawkiw both predeceased. Brother of Volodymyr and Pavlo both predeceased and Mihaylina of Monastyryska, Ukraine. Born on the family farm near the city of Monastyryska, in Ukraine, Harry came to Canada from Austria as a young man after the Second World War. In 1949 he was hired at Inco and worked as a maintenance mechanic in the Copper Cliff locomotive shop after which he retired in 1986. During his work time with Inco and after his retirement, he followed his passion in the building trade, constructing many homes in the city. In 1950 he met Johanna Simko in Sudbury where they were married the same year. Throughout the years Harry actively participated in various Sudbury Ukrainian organizations, being past president of the Sudbury branches of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, the Brotherhood of Veterans of the First Ukrainian Division, and League of Ukrainian Canadians. He was a lifelong member and participant of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. A Bansal, his family physician. Special thanks to Dr. Andre Roch and the exceptional staff of the fifth floor of Extendicare York for their compassionate care and support over the past year.
Visitation will be held at Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home, 233 Larch St., Sudbury on Thursday, December 27, 2018 from 6-8pm with Panachyda at 7pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church on Friday December 28, 2018 at 10am. Entombment to follow at the Civic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church or the Alzheimer Society of Sudbury would be appreciated.
