Obituary for Randall George "Ran" Smith

Randall George "Ran" Smith
Smith, Randall George
In loving memory of “Ran” (as known by his Newfie family and friends), “George” (as known by you Mainlanders), 92 years. Passed away peacefully listening to CBC on the radio, Tuesday, June 30th, 2015 at Health Sciences North after a courageous battle with cancer that took this strong man down. Predeceased by the love of his life of 33 years, Hilda (Higdon-Moss) in 2012. Whom he waited a long time to marry and remained a bachelor til the age of 56. On July 27, 1979 not only did he become a husband for the first time but an instant father to 6 kids; Glen Moss (Carol), Dale Moss (Joy), Leslie Palkovitz (“Butch” Joe), Dean Moss (Susan), Rocky Moss and Sonja Alcock (Steve). Beloved Poppa to David, Melanie, Vicki, Hollie, Glen Jr., Morgan, Mitchell and Joshua. Great Grandpa to 11 adorable great grandchildren. Predeceased by his parents Arthur and Daisy (Moss) Smith; siblings Harold (Alma), Ted (Peg), Miriam, Mavis (George), Kevin (Bernice), Albert (Doreen), Shirley (Harvey) and Robert (Joan). “Ran” served in the Newfoundland Regiment overseas during WWII as a gunner and like many Vets who has seen battle; he never talked about that part of his life that often. He once said with regards to Remembrance Day: “I don’t need a special day of the year to remind me, I live it everyday and want to forget.” After the war he moved to the “mainland” here in Sudbury area to work for INCO in Levack, where he boarded with the Winn Family (whom he considered his new family) until his marriage in 1979. “George” was an avid gardener, Union Stewart, hunter, curler, bowler, fishermen, boater, camper, adventurer, trapper, woodsman and prospector. He had a large collection of “rocks” that to the normal eye were jus rocks but to George they were “gold”! But his greatest hobby was watching the “ticker” numbers of the DOW, TSE or any other stocks he could watch to “play the market”; something he had done very well at. Ran/George will be fondly remembered and never forgotten.
