Hilkka Orvokki Ahopelto
(nee Puskala)
Passed away peacefully on Monday, May 28th, 2017 in her 90th year at Health Sciences North in Sudbury. Born in Lehtimaki, Finland, she immigrated to Canada in 1951 with her husband and daughter. Hilkka was the beloved wife of Aito Ahopelto (predeceased 2005) and the cherished mother of Liisa Ahopelto of Sudbury and of Roy Ahopelto (Jane) of Ottawa. Her grandchildren, Terry Ahopelto (Lesley) of Kitchener, Brian Ahopelto (Anne) and Kristina Marion (Pascal) both of Ottawa, as well as her great-grandchildren Keela, Mikko, Oliver, Tristan, and Audrey, were her pride and joy. Hilkka was predeceased by her mother, Rauha, stepfather, Lauri, and brother Kalle Lager. She is survived by her sister Eïne, brother Matti, nieces, nephews, and in-laws in Finland.
Hilkka derived great pleasure from singing, whether in the church choir when younger, or in sing-alongs at Finlandia Village in later years. A quiet person, she nevertheless exhibited a wonderful sense of humour when relaxing with friends. She was a member of St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church, the Finlandia Village Ladies Auxiliary and served as secretary of the Tenants’ Association.
If desired, a donation may be made in Hilkka’s memory to the Finlandia SISU Fund or to St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church.
At Hilkka’s request there will be no funeral visitation or service. Cremation with entombment at the Civic Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the Lougheed Funeral Home.
