Michael ‘Mike’ (Jr.) Jon Mooney
July 5, 1970 – October 14, 2017
In loving memory of Michael (Jr.) Jon Mooney. Michael will be sadly missed by his sons, Michael Jr. and Ryan, and by their mother, Marnie Mooney. Michael was the loving son of Michael Sr. and Barbara Mooney, the brother of Matthew and cherished grandson of Georgette & Ferdinand Mooney (predeceased) and Niilo & Birgitta Leino (predeceased). Michael was well known locally through his involvement with hockey. He was an exceptional hockey player and accepted a scholarship to the University of Alabama, and played locally with the original Rayside-Balfour Canadians. He made a natural progression from player to coach and dedicated many years with the SMHA and the NOJHL. He transitioned from coaching becoming the Franchise owner of the Nickel Barons and came full circle by moving the team to Chelmsford and renaming it once again to the Rayside-Balfour Canadians. Michael followed in Michael Sr.’s entrepreneurial footsteps and purchased Shotecrete Plus along with his brother, Matthew, which he operated for many years. Michael was a special nephew to John Mooney, Mark & Cathy Mooney, Larry & Lucille Mooney, Bob Mooney, Cathy & Guy Vezeau, Donna & Rudy (predeceased) Gross and a cherished brother-in-law to Julia and Robert and son-in-law to Rosalind & Bob DaPrat. He will be remembered as a special uncle to Mackenzie (mother Hana) and Gregory. Many friends, former colleagues, former players and teammates will miss the sharp wit and dry humour that Michael was known for. With all of Michael’s accomplishments, the biggest source of his pride was his sons, Michael Jr. and Ryan, and we take comfort in knowing that he will remain their biggest fan.
